It’s easy to feel like God is with you and for you when you’re at a good place in life. When you’re full of faith. When you’re experiencing breakthroughs and success. But what about the low moments? When your faith has ebbed away and discouragement has seeped into your heart? In moments like these, it can feel like God is a million miles away.

My friend, nothing could be further from the truth. In His Word, our Lord Jesus tells us that He is “close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit” (Ps. 34:18 NIV). And He gives us a glimpse of this unrelenting love of His through Elijah’s story.

The prophet Elijah did many great and miraculous things during his ministry, but there came a time in his life when it seemed like everything he had worked for, everything he had poured his heart into, counted for nothing. Discouraged and depressed, he ran into the wilderness and isolated himself.

That’s exactly where God found him. At his lowest point, when he had cut himself off from everyone he knew, God drew near to him with comfort and strength (see 1 Kings 19:1–8). In his discouragement, Elijah encountered the Lord’s tenderness and closeness in a way that he had never experienced before.

Beloved, just like God drew near to Elijah in his day of discouragement, He wants to draw near to you too. Will you hold on to the words of Psalm 34:18, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted”? Especially when it feels like He’s far away. Listen to the still small voice that assures you He’s closer than you know.
